What is Neurodivergence?

Neurodivergence refers to variations in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood, and other mental functions. It encompasses conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and others. Rather than viewing these as disorders to be cured, the neurodiversity paradigm recognizes them as different ways of thinking and processing information, each with its own strengths and challenges.

Understanding Neurodiversity

Nathaniel Hawley challenges us to examine our stereotypes and preconceptions around neurodiversity in this TEDxSt Albans talk.

Types of Neurodivergence

Neurodivergence encompasses a wide range of cognitive variations. Here are some common types:

Autism Spectrum

Characterized by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of behavior. Many autistic individuals excel in pattern recognition, attention to detail, and systematic thinking.

ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder involves differences in attention regulation, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. ADHD brains often excel in creativity, hyperfocus, and thinking outside the box.

Dyslexia

A learning difference that affects reading and language processing. Dyslexic individuals often have strong spatial reasoning, creative thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

Dyscalculia

A learning difference affecting mathematical understanding. People with dyscalculia may excel in creative fields, verbal communication, and holistic thinking.

Why Take Neurodivergent Tests?

Understanding your neurodivergent traits can be empowering. These screening tests can help you identify patterns in your thinking, behavior, and experiences that may be related to neurodivergence. This self-knowledge can guide you toward appropriate support, accommodations, and strategies that work with your unique brain.

Self-Understanding

Gain insights into your cognitive style, sensory preferences, and behavioral patterns. Understanding your neurotype can explain lifelong experiences and challenges.

Discover Your Strengths

Neurodivergent individuals often have unique strengths. Understanding your neurotype can help you leverage these strengths in work, relationships, and daily life.

Note: These tests are screening tools, not diagnostic instruments. A formal diagnosis requires comprehensive evaluation by qualified healthcare professionals. These tests cannot replace professional assessment. If you have concerns about your mental health or cognitive functioning, please consult a healthcare provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "neurodivergent" mean?

Neurodivergent is an umbrella term for people whose brains work noticeably differently from the typical majority in areas like attention, learning, social communication, or sensory processing. It includes autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other natural variations rather than illnesses.

What are the main types of neurodivergence?

The most commonly discussed forms are autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, and many people also include Tourette syndrome, OCD, and dyspraxia. Each has its own traits, and many people identify with more than one.

How do I know if I might be neurodivergent?

Common signs include lifelong differences in focus, social interaction, sensory sensitivity, learning, or organization that stand out compared with peers. Free screeners like those on this page can help you reflect, but they cannot confirm anything on their own.

Can an online test tell me if I'm neurodivergent?

No. Online screeners indicate whether your answers resemble common traits and are a first step for reflection. A reliable answer needs a qualified clinician who considers your history, context, and standardized assessment.

Should I get a formal assessment?

If traits consistently affect work, study, or relationships, a professional assessment can bring clarity, access to support or accommodations, and self-understanding. If your daily life is not affected, self-education and community resources may be enough for now.
