SAAM

State Adult Attachment Measure

More about this measure

Introduction

SAAM assesses current feelings of attachment along three dimensions: Security, Avoidance and Anxiety. Scores are 1–7 with midpoint 4.0.

Unlike trait measures of attachment — such as the ECR, which captures your general pattern in romantic relationships — the SAAM treats attachment as a fluctuating state: your here-and-now sense of security, avoidance, and anxiety. Research shows that momentary attachment states shift with context, mood, and recent interactions.

After you finish, compare this state-based snapshot with your stable attachment style by taking the free ECR test. Together, the two give you a fuller picture of how your attachment system operates in daily life.
