How to Play Solitaire: Setup, Rules, and Strategy
Solitaire (also known as Patience or Klondike) is a single-player card game. Your goal is to move 52 cards to four foundation piles by suit from Ace to King.
Objective
Your goal is to move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles (one for each suit) in ascending order from Ace to King. You can stack cards in the tableau by alternating colors and descending rank to reveal face-down cards.
Setup
Solitaire consists of four types of piles: Foundation, Tableau, Stockpile, and Waste. Before starting:
- Foundation: Four spots in the top right, one for each suit.
- Tableau: Deal seven columns from left to right: 1 card in the first, 2 in the second... up to 7 in the seventh. Only the top card of each column is face up.
- Stockpile: Place the remaining 24 cards face down to form the stockpile (usually above the first column).
- Waste: Cards drawn from the stockpile are flipped into the waste pile. You can only use the top card of the waste pile.
Gameplay
- Move Face-Up Cards Only: You can only move face-up cards in the tableau and the top card of the waste pile. Try to reveal more face-down cards.
- Draw from Stock: Click the stockpile to flip 1 card (Draw 1) or 3 cards (Draw 3). Only the top card of the waste pile is available.
- Assess the Tableau: Before moving, check if you can reveal face-down cards or create empty columns.
- Prioritize Aces and Twos: Move them to the foundation piles as soon as possible to clear space.
- Stack by Color and Rank: Build tableau columns in descending order with alternating colors (e.g., Red 6 on Black 7). You can move valid sequences together.
- Build Foundations: When possible, move cards to foundation piles in ascending order by suit.
- Manage Waste and Stock: Use the top waste card if helpful; otherwise, draw again. Recycle the waste pile when the stock is empty.
- Fill Empty Columns: Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) can be placed in empty columns.
Winning Strategies
- Prioritize Revealing Hidden Cards: Reveal as many face-down cards as possible to increase your options.
- Focus on Large Columns: Columns with more cards often hide key cards; prioritize clearing them.
- Remember Stock Cycle: Keep track of the cards in the stock/waste cycle to know when to draw.
- Tableau Before Foundation: Sometimes it's better to keep cards in the tableau to help reveal others before moving to foundation.
- Use Foundation Cards Strategically: You can temporarily move cards back from foundation to tableau if it helps.
- Empty Columns are Valuable: Create empty columns early to place Kings and unlock more moves.
- Use Hints and Undo: When in doubt, try hints or undo to explore possibilities.
