Korean Mahjong Rules

Traditional two-suit mahjong from Korea: no bamboo, no chow, and a 2-fan minimum win with flowers and ready declarations.

OOverview

Korean Mahjong is a regional variant played with a 108-tile deck: characters and dots (no bamboo), winds, dragons and eight flower tiles. The two-suit deck and chow ban make every hand about triplets, pairs and fast terminal plays.

TTiles

108 tiles: characters 1-9, dots 1-9 (four of each), all wind and dragon honors, plus eight flowers. Drawing a flower reveals it for bonus fans and draws a replacement.

WWinning

Win with four sets plus a pair, or seven pairs. Chow (sequence claims) is not allowed — hands are built from your own draws plus pung and kong calls. A minimum of 2 fans is required to declare a win; flowers, kong-flush and last-tile bonuses do not count toward it.

SScoring

Fans: all-pungs 2, full flush 8, half flush 2, seven pairs 4, little/three dragons 4/8, little/big four winds 8/12, all honors 12, concealed triplets 4 (four 8). Self-draw concealed 2. Discarder pays double; self-draw collects from all three.

Special Rules

There is no riichi; a ready declaration exists in some rule sets. Sacred-discard (furiten-like) restrictions apply after passing a winning tile. Settlement uses counters per player, with bonuses for collecting all flowers.

How to Play Korean Mahjong

Korean Mahjong uses only two number suits (characters and dots) plus honors and flowers. Here is how a round works.

  1. 1

    Build the wall

108 tiles are shuffled and stacked. Each player draws a 13-tile hand; flowers are revealed and replaced from the wall.

  2. 2

    Draw and discard

On your turn, draw one tile and discard one. You may not call chow (no sequences from discards) — only pung and kong.

  3. 3

    Call pung or kong

Claim a discarded tile to complete a triplet (pung) or quad (kong). A kong draws a replacement tile from the wall end.

  4. 4

    Go out with 2 fans

Win with four sets and a pair (or seven pairs) worth at least 2 fans. Flowers, kong-after-draw and last-tile wins pay bonus but do not count toward the minimum.

  5. 5

    Settle

Discarder pays double; on a self-draw win all three opponents pay. The dealer keeps the deal after a win.
