What is Lights Off?
The first native iPhone game: Lights Off (2007)
Lights Off's story begins with Tiger Electronics, which launched its iconic game Lights Out in 1995. The game introduced a simple yet addictive concept: players had to turn off all the lights on a grid by toggling switches. Its innovative gameplay quickly made it a household favorite.
In 2007, Lucas Newman and Adam Betts reimagined the game for the newly launched iPhone. With its revolutionary touch screen, the iPhone provided a perfect platform for puzzle games like Lights Off. Newman, a developer behind Delicious Monster, collaborated with Betts to create a visually polished and engaging experience, reviving the charm of Lights Out in a modern format.
Lights Off stands out not only for its gameplay but also as a technological milestone. They built the game before there was an official iPhone SDK or App Store. It was one of the first native iPhone apps and only available to jailbreakers at the time!
The game came with a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer that reflected the DIY ethos of early app developers:
“We doubt you'll end up bricking your phone, but do keep in mind the Light Off disclaimer: 'Lights Off is provided on an ‘as is' basis, without warranty of any kind. If your iPhone breaks, don't cry on our shoulders.'”
