Hex Kingdom

A turn-based kingdom conquest game: your province earns coins for every tile, towns store the money, and cutting an enemy's land in half starves their army. Merge peasants into pikemen, build castles on the chokepoints, and watch out for bandits.

How to play

  • Every tile of your province pays 1 coin each turn. Coins pay your units first, then the rest is stored in your towns.
  • Units move anywhere inside your province and can conquer any tile next to it — with strictly more strength than the defender.
  • Move two units of the same type onto each other to merge them into a stronger one.
  • Units cut off from their town turn into bandits the moment the turn ends. Cutting an enemy province is the strongest move in the game.
  • If a province cannot pay its units, every unit there rebels and becomes a bandit.
  • Build castles on chokepoints: they defend at 2 and wall off their six neighbouring tiles — no more.

Tips

  • Keep at least two coins of surplus income — buying a unit you cannot pay for destroys your own army.
  • Towns store their coins separately; capturing an enemy town burns the money inside it.
  • Thin corridors are the most valuable tiles on the map: one tile can cut an army off.
  • Rivals gang up on whoever grows too big — winning fast beats growing forever.

About this game

Hex Kingdom is a compact single-player wargame about provinces, money and supply lines. There is no randomness in combat: strength strictly greater than defence takes the tile. The only dice are the bandits, and even they move deterministically so you can rewind and try another plan.

It trains planning and spatial thinking: every turn asks you whether to take money or cut the opponent's supply.
