Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question? Let us know.
What is Dominion?
Dominion is a deck-building card game designed by Donald X. Vaccarino, published in 2008. Players start with an identical deck of weak cards and improve it during play by buying cards from a shared Supply. The goal is to have the most Victory Points when the game ends.
How do I play Dominion?
Each turn has two phases: the Action phase (play Action cards from your hand, each costs 1 Action) and the Buy phase (spend Coins from Treasures to buy cards from the Supply). At the end of your turn, discard everything and draw 5 new cards. The game ends when Provinces run out or 3 Supply piles are empty.
What are the AI difficulty levels?
There are four levels: Novice (simple Big Money strategy), Regular (uses basic Action cards), Hard (strategic play with game-phase detection), and Master (Monte Carlo simulation for buy decisions). Start with Novice if you're learning.
How does the undo work?
Undo rewinds the game to the last point where it was your turn. This is useful for learning — if you make a mistake, you can take it back. The AI's internal state resets too, so subsequent play may differ slightly.
Can I choose which Kingdom cards to play with?
Yes! On the setup screen you can pick from 8 preset Kingdom combinations (First Game, Big Money, Interaction, Village Square, Size Distortion, Treasure Hunt, Witch Hunt, Engine Builder) or click 'Random' to get a random set of 10 Kingdom cards from the Base set and Prosperity expansion (Treasures and Actions), with the option to filter by expansion.
What's the difference between Treasure, Victory, and Action cards?
Treasure cards (Copper, Silver, Gold) give you Coins to spend in the Buy phase. Victory cards (Estate, Duchy, Province) are worth points at game end but do nothing during play. Action cards have special effects when played in the Action phase — they let you draw cards, gain actions, attack opponents, and more.

How to Play Dominion
Goal: Have the most Victory Points (VP) when the game ends. The game ends when the Province pile is empty, or any 3 supply piles are empty (4 in 3-4 player games). Tiebreaker: If scores are tied, the player who has taken fewer turns wins; if turns are also equal, the game is a shared victory.
Turn Structure
Each turn has two phases:
- Action Phase – Play Action cards from your hand. Each Action card costs 1 Action. You start each turn with 1 Action. Cards like Village give you more.
- Buy Phase – Spend Coins to buy cards from the Supply. You start with 1 Buy. Cards like Market give you more. Your Treasures in hand automatically add to your Coins.
Cleanup: At the end of your turn, discard all cards in play and your hand, then draw 5 new cards.
Card Types
- Treasure 🟠 – Provide Coins in the Buy phase (Copper $1, Silver $2, Gold $3).
- Victory 🏡 – Worth VP at game end (Estate 1, Duchy 3, Province 6). Dead weight during play.
- Curse 💀 – Worth -1 VP. Given to you by attacks like Witch.
- Action ⚔️ – Do cool things when played in the Action phase.
- Reaction 🛡️ – Reveal in response to an Attack (e.g., Moat blocks attacks).
- Attack ⚔️ – Harm other players. They may react.
The Supply
Each game has 10 Kingdom cards (randomly chosen or preset) plus the basic cards (Copper, Silver, Gold, Estate, Duchy, Province, Curse). All players buy from the same shared Supply.
Strategy Tips
- Thin your deck with Chapel to remove weak starters.
- Add drawing with Smithy, Laboratory, Council Room.
- Add actions with Village, Festival to chain cards.
- Race for Provinces once you can reliably hit $8.
Strategy Tips
Opening Strategy:
- Buy Silver early with $3-$5; Gold is hard to reach without Silver first.
- Consider opening with a strong $2-$4 Action card if the Kingdom supports it.
- Chapel opening is powerful — trash your starting Coppers and Estates fast.
Mid-Game Engine Building:
- Build a deck that draws itself every turn — multiple Smithies + Villages.
- Use Throne Room on Smithy or Laboratory for huge value.
- Watch the Province pile — start greening (buying Victory) when it's about half gone.
End-Game Greening:
- Switch from engine cards to Victory cards once you can hit $8 consistently.
- Duchy ($5) becomes valuable when Provinces run low.
- Estate ($2) is worth grabbing in the last 1-2 turns if you have spare buys.
Countering Attacks:
- Moat ($2) blocks all attacks — keep one or two in hand against Militia/Witch.
- Trashing Coppers with Moneylender weakens Thief and protects your economy.
