About the Test
The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) is a 20-item self-report questionnaire developed by Graeme Taylor, Michael Bagby, and James Parker. It measures three facets of alexithymia: difficulty identifying feelings, difficulty describing feelings, and externally oriented thinking.
How the Test Works
You will rate 20 statements on a 5-point scale from 'Strongly disagree' to 'Strongly agree'. Five items are reverse-scored. Your total score ranges from 20 to 100, and you will also receive a separate score for each of the three subscales.
Interpreting Your Results
Total scores of 20–51 suggest non-alexithymia, 52–60 suggest possible alexithymia, and 61–100 suggest alexithymia. Remember that alexithymia is a personality trait, not a mental disorder — it varies among individuals and can change with practice and support.
