What does BPM mean?

BPM stands for beats per minute — how many steady pulses the metronome plays in one minute. 60 BPM is one tick per second; 120 BPM is two. Tempo markings in sheet music (allegro, andante) correspond to BPM ranges.

What tempo should I practice at?

Start slower than feels necessary — typically 60–80 BPM for a new passage — and only increase the speed once you can play it cleanly several times in a row. Practicing slowly with a steady pulse builds more reliable timing than practicing fast and sloppy.

What is a time signature on a metronome?

The time signature groups beats into repeating patterns, for example 4/4 (four beats per bar, common in pop and rock) or 3/4 (three beats, a waltz). With a time signature set, many metronomes emphasize the first beat of each bar so you can hear where the pattern restarts.

Why practice with a metronome at all?

A metronome gives you an objective, unchanging pulse to play against, which exposes rushing or dragging that is hard to notice on your own. It is standard practice advice across instruments, though musical phrasing still means learning when to play with — and against — the grid.
