About This Game

Space Invaders is a legendary arcade game originally released by Taito in 1978. It's one of the most influential video games of all time, pioneering the fixed shooter genre and establishing many conventions still used today. This Kuakua edition reimagines the classic with a marine-themed twist: instead of pixel aliens, you'll face 12 types of ocean creatures rising from the depths! The core gameplay remains faithful to the original — defend your base, dodge enemy fire, and clear each wave to survive.

How to Play Space Invaders

Goal: Defend your base from descending waves of marine invaders. Clear every enemy in a wave to advance; if the formation reaches the bottom row or you run out of lives, the game ends.

The Playfield

The battlefield is a vertical play area roughly 640×480 pixels. Your ship sits at the bottom; enemies descend from the top. Four green shield bunkers hover between you and the invaders during early waves.

Your Ship

  • Move: ← → or A D to slide left and right. Mouse aim is also supported.
  • Fire: Space or click to launch a bullet upward. A cooldown bar shows when you can shoot again — only one bullet may be on screen at a time, so aim carefully.
  • Pause: P or Esc to pause or resume.

Enemy Formation

Each wave arranges enemies in a grid of rows × columns. Wave 1 starts with 3 rows × 6 columns using 3 enemy types. Each subsequent wave adds +1 row, +1 column, and +1 enemy type at the top of the formation. The grid marches side to side and drops one step closer whenever it hits a screen edge.

The 12 Marine Enemy Types

Enemies are worth more points the higher they appear in the formation:

  • Octopus – 10 pts (basic foot soldier)
  • Crab – 20 pts · Squid – 30 pts · Jellyfish – 40 pts
  • Stingray – 50 pts · Seahorse – 60 pts · Pufferfish – 70 pts
  • Anglerfish – 80 pts · Shark – 90 pts · Turtle – 100 pts
  • Manta Ray – 110 pts · Narwhal – 120 pts (top of the food chain)

Mystery UFO

A UFO periodically streaks across the top of the screen. Hitting it awards a randomized bonus of 50–300 points. The UFO speeds up and appears more often in later waves.

Shields

Four bunkers shield you from enemy fire — but they're destructible. Both your bullets and enemy blasts erode them piece by piece. Shields are only available in waves 1–4; later waves force you to dodge without cover.

Lives & Scoring

  • You start with 3 lives in early waves (2 in waves 7–8, 1 from wave 9 onward).
  • Earn a bonus life every 1,500 points, up to a maximum of 5 lives.
  • Each destroyed enemy adds its point value to your score. The high score persists across sessions.

Wave Progression

Waves are named TIDAL → SURGE → CURRENT → TSUNAMI → ABYSS → TEMPEST → MAELSTROM → LEVIATHAN → KRAKEN → TYPHOON → APOCALYPSE+. Enemy speed, fire rate, and UFO frequency all scale up with each wave. If you lose all lives, you restart from the last wave you reached, not from wave 1.

Strategy Tips

Use Shields as Strategic Cover, Not Walls:

  • Shields erode from both your bullets and enemy fire. Don't shoot through your own cover — it's a finite resource that disappears after wave 4.
  • Position your ship just behind a bunker and pop out to fire, then retreat. Enemies can't hit what they can't see.
  • As enemies descend lower, shields become less useful — plan to clear the wave before they're on top of you.

Predict Enemy Fire Patterns:

  • Enemies only fire one bullet at a time per wave. Watch the lane currently threatening you and sidestep early.
  • The lowest enemy in each column is the only one that can fire straight down at you. Clearing the bottom row first dramatically reduces incoming fire.
  • Later waves increase fire rate — stay mobile and never sit in one spot for more than a second.

Time the Mystery UFO:

  • The UFO appears on a periodic timer that shortens with each wave. Learn the rhythm and position yourself near the screen edges where it enters.
  • The UFO awards 50, 100, 150, or 300 points depending on hidden internal timing. Don't break formation-clearing momentum just to chase it.
  • If the UFO is crossing while the enemy grid is near the bottom, ignore the UFO and focus on survival.

Clear Priority — Bottom-Up, but Watch the Clock:

  • Clear bottom-row enemies first to reduce incoming fire and buy time.
  • However, the formation speeds up as enemies are destroyed. With only a handful left, they'll zip across the screen at terrifying speed — clear them before the grid thins out.
  • Leave the high-value top rows for last if you can afford the time, but never at the cost of letting the formation reach the bottom.

Edge Strategy:

  • Hovering near the left or right wall lets you snap off quick shots as the formation approaches the edge — that's when enemies are most vulnerable to a single well-timed bullet.
  • The edge also gives you a clear lane to fire at the UFO when it appears on your side.

Wave Transition Techniques:

  • When a wave is nearly cleared, re-center your ship before the next wave spawns. New formations start centered, and starting in the middle gives you equal reaction time either way.
  • If you're near a bonus life threshold, slow down and farm small enemies safely before triggering the next wave.
  • From wave 5 onward, shields vanish — shift your strategy from "hide behind cover" to "constant motion and prediction."

Bonus Life Management:

  • You earn a bonus life every 1,500 points (max 5 lives). Aggressively hunting UFOs and high-value enemies in early waves helps bank spare lives for the brutal later waves.
  • Don't hoard lives — taking a calculated risk to clear a wave quickly is often better than playing too passively and letting the formation descend.

About Space Invaders

Space Invaders is one of the most influential video games ever created. It was designed and programmed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released by Taito in 1978 in Japan. Originally built as a shooting game inspired by Atari's Breakout and the alien-battle premise of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, it went on to define an entire genre.

The First Blockbuster Arcade Game: Space Invaders was so popular in Japan that it reportedly caused a national shortage of 100-yen coins — a myth that, while exaggerated, speaks to the game's unprecedented cultural impact. By 1980, it had popularized the video game arcade as a social space and become the first game licensed for the Atari 2600 console, quadrupling the console's sales.

Design Innovations: Nishikado's creation pioneered several conventions still used today: the high score, the increasing difficulty curve (enemies speed up as fewer remain), multiple enemy types with different point values, and the destructible shield bunker. The game's side-to-side marching alien formation became one of the most recognizable visual icons of the early video game era.

Cultural Impact: Space Invaders inspired countless sequels, clones, and adaptations. It appeared on virtually every home computer and console of the 1980s, inspired the music of artists like Buckner & Garcia, and helped launch the multibillion-dollar video game industry. The pixelated alien silhouette remains a global shorthand for "video game" itself.

Cognitive Benefits: Beyond nostalgia, Space Invaders exercises several mental skills:

  • Reaction speed — Tracking multiple moving threats and responding in fractions of a second.
  • Hand–eye coordination — Translating visual information into precise motor commands.
  • Spatial perception — Estimating trajectories of bullets and descending enemy formations.
  • Pattern recognition — Predicting enemy fire patterns, formation movement, and UFO timing.
  • Sustained attention — Maintaining focus through long waves with escalating intensity.

This Kuakua Implementation:

  • 🌊 Marine-themed reimagining — 12 ocean creatures replace the classic alien pixel art, from Octopus (10 pts) to the legendary Narwhal (120 pts).
  • 🌊 Infinite wave system — Waves are named after ocean forces (TIDAL, SURGE, TSUNAMI, ABYSS, KRAKEN, TYPHOON, APOCALYPSE+). Each wave adds a row, a column, and a new enemy type.
  • 🌊 Progressive challenge — Speed, fire rate, and UFO frequency scale with each wave; shields vanish after wave 4; lives tighten in later waves.
  • 🌊 Multiple controls — Keyboard, mouse aim, and touch-friendly joystick for mobile play.
  • 🌊 Resume from last wave — Lose all lives and you restart from the last wave you reached, not from wave 1.
  • 🌊 Bonus life system — Earn an extra life every 1,500 points, up to 5 lives total.

Note: Space Invaders is for entertainment and light cognitive exercise. The original Space Invaders is a trademark of Taito Corporation; this is an educational reimagining that does not claim affiliation.
