Robots Escape (Gnobots)

Escape the chasing robots! Move strategically to survive, lead robots into collisions, or use safe teleports to escape.

🎮 How to Play

Survive as long as possible by outmaneuvering the robot horde. Destroy all robots on a level to advance.

📐 Arena Setup

  • :A 12×20 grid where you (the blue dot) start in the center
  • :Red squares are killer robots that move one step toward you every turn
  • :Striped cells are collision debris — dangerous for robots, safe for you

🕹️ Controls

Movement

8-directional movement: WASD/Arrows for cardinal directions, Q/E/Z/C for diagonals

Wait

Press Wait (center button / S while stationary) to stay in place — robots still move toward you!

Teleport

Safe Teleport (Space): Randomly relocate to a safe empty cell. Limited uses per level!

💀 How You Die

  1. If ANY robot moves onto your cell after your move → CAUGHT = GAME OVER
  2. You CANNOT eat, destroy, or pass through robots — they always kill on contact
  3. Waiting in place is risky — if a robot is adjacent, it will catch you next turn
  4. Teleporting to a position where no safe spot exists also results in death

💥 How to Destroy Robots

  1. Robot + Robot Collision: When two or more robots land on the same cell, ALL colliding robots are destroyed and become a junk pile
  2. Robot + Junk Collision: If a robot moves onto an existing junk pile, that robot is destroyed (the junk remains)
  3. Each destroyed robot scores 10 points
  4. Junk piles are permanent obstacles within the level — plan your escape routes around them

✦ Safe Teleport Mechanics

  1. You start each game with 2 safe teleports
  2. Each completed level grants +1 additional teleport
  3. Teleport randomly places you on any safe (empty, no-robot, no-junk) cell
  4. After teleporting, robots STILL move toward your new position — so even teleporting can be fatal if robots are nearby!
  5. If no safe cells exist when you try to teleport → instant death

Scoring

  • +10 points per robot destroyed (via collision)
  • Bonus points for clearing all robots and advancing levels
  • Higher levels = more robots = higher potential scores but greater danger

Strategy Tips

1

Lead Them Into Traps

Move along edges or toward corners to funnel multiple robots into the same cell. A diagonal run can pull 4+ robots into one collision point.

Game Variants

Classic Mode

Standard rules: all robots chase you each turn, limited safe teleports, scoring based on kills.

Nightmare Mode

Faster robots, more spawns per level, fewer teleports. For experienced players only.

History

Originally created for the GNU Project as 'gnobots2', this game is based on the classic 1980s Daleks game. The core mechanic of leading enemies into collisions has been a puzzle strategy staple for decades.
