Number Munchers
Eat the right numbers, dodge the Troggles!
Frequently Asked Questions
Have another question? Let us know.
How do I move the Muncher?
Use arrow keys or WASD on desktop, or the on-screen D-pad on mobile, to move around. Moving onto a cell does NOT eat the number — press Space, Enter, or E (or the Zap button on mobile) to eat the number on your current cell. You can pass through numbers without eating them.
What are the six game modes?
Multiples (eat multiples of N), Factors (eat factors of N), Primes (eat prime numbers), Equality (eat expressions equal to N), Inequality (eat expressions NOT equal to N), and Challenge (modes rotate every 3 levels).
What do the Troggles do?
Five Troggle types roam the board: Reggie chases in straight lines, Fraidy flees, Diaper drops new numbers, Eater consumes numbers, and Smarty hunts you intelligently. Touching a hostile Troggle costs a life.
What are the difficulty levels?
Easy: 6×5 grid, numbers 1-25, two Troggle types. Medium: 6×5 grid, numbers 1-80, four Troggle types. Hard: 7×5 grid, numbers 1-200, all five Troggle types.
How does scoring work?
Each correct number gives +10 points. Three or more correct in a short window grants a +5 combo bonus. Wrong numbers cost -5 points. Your high score is saved in the browser.
What happens when I lose all lives?
The game ends. You can restart with a new random board or return to the menu to pick a different mode or difficulty.
Is this game educational?
Yes. Number Munchers is a classic educational math game that practices mental arithmetic, number theory (factors, primes, multiples), and quick equation evaluation. It is for self-reflection and practice, not a diagnostic tool.

About the Game
Number Munchers is a classic educational math game originally released by MECC in 1986. Players guide the green Muncher around a grid, eating numbers that match a rule while avoiding the mischievous Troggles. The game became a classroom staple across thousands of schools and remains a beloved memory of the early edutainment era.
Our version preserves the classic gameplay and adds six modes (Multiples, Factors, Primes, Equality, Inequality, Challenge), three difficulty levels, and five Troggle types with distinct AI behaviors. The Challenge mode rotates sub-modes every three levels for endless variety. Use arrow keys or WASD on desktop, or the on-screen D-pad on mobile.
Psychology Behind the Game
Cognitive Skill Enhancement
Number Munchers engages working memory, rapid mental arithmetic, and pattern recognition simultaneously. Players must hold the target rule in mind, scan the board for matching numbers, evaluate expressions on the fly, and plan safe paths around Troggles. Research in numerical cognition suggests that time-pressure arithmetic practice strengthens fact retrieval and reduces reliance on counting strategies, while rule-switching modes (Challenge) exercise cognitive flexibility.
Problem-Solving Strategies
Effective play combines top-down scanning with risk-aware routing. Sweep the board systematically to spot every matching cell before moving, then plan a path that minimizes exposure to hostile Troggles. When the board refreshes (after Diaper drops new numbers or Eater consumes cells), re-scan before committing. In Challenge mode, mentally rehearse each sub-mode's rule as it rotates.
