Eidetic Memory Test

Study a pattern for a few seconds, then recreate it from memory — inspired by Haber's classic research on eidetic imagery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have another question? Let us know.

Is eidetic memory the same as photographic memory?

Mostly no. Eidetic imagery typically lasts from seconds to minutes and is a common stage of normal visual processing. 'Photographic memory' — the ability to recall pages of text or scenes exactly, for years — is extremely rare, poorly documented, and may not exist as popularly imagined.

Why do children show eidetic imagery more than adults?

Haber and others suggested that children rely more on concrete visual strategies before language-based coding matures. As we grow older we increasingly encode information verbally and abstractly, so vivid picture-like memory becomes less common.

Can eidetic memory be trained?

There is no reliable evidence that true eidetic imagery can be trained. However, visual memory and attention can improve with practice — techniques like chunking, visualization, and the method of loci help people remember complex patterns much better.

What is eidetic memory?

Eidetic memory is the ability to hold a vivid visual image in mind for a short time after the stimulus is gone. Ralph Haber's studies in the 1970s found that a small proportion of children showed clear eidetic imagery. True 'photographic memory' that lasts for years is extremely rare and remains controversial.
