Attention Network Test (ANT)

Judge arrow direction using cues and flankers to estimate alerting, orienting, and executive indices. Keys: Left (F) / Right (J).

Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

Separate alerting, orienting, and executive attention networks via cue and flanker manipulations.

Instructions

Use F/J keys to indicate target arrow direction; includes practice and formal trials.

Outputs

Network indices and per‑condition RT/accuracy, plus per‑trial data.

What does this have to do with everyday phone use?

The test separates attention into alerting, orienting and executive control. Fewer phone pings mostly reduces alerting and orienting load, so the brain spends less energy re-orienting to the phone and can keep its executive control on the task you actually chose.

Implementation

Cue conditions: No/Center/Double/Spatial; flanker conditions: Congruent/Incongruent/Neutral; practice and formal blocks; CSV/JSON export.

Key metrics

Alerting (No−Double), Orienting (Center−Spatial), Executive (Incongruent−Congruent).
